Lyophilised peptides are supplied as a dry powder and have to be reconstituted before any analytical work. That requires a diluent, and the choice of diluent affects how long the prepared solution remains usable.

Bacteriostatic water is sterile water with a small amount of benzyl alcohol added as a preservative. The preservative is what allows a vial to be entered more than once without the shelf life collapsing, which is why it is the standard choice for multi-use research handling over plain sterile water.

The arithmetic that follows is a single division: concentration equals the mass in the vial divided by the volume of diluent added.
